Kirkwood Hall Theoretical Redesign
Project type
Architectural Remodel
Date
January 2025
Location
Kirkwood Hall, IU Bloomington
The redesign of the Eskenazi School of Architecture and Design merges the building’s historic neoclassical architecture with a modern, open, and light-filled environment. By incorporating sleek black metal frames and reflective glass, the design enhances spatial perception while preserving the integrity of the existing structure. This creates a dynamic dialogue between the building’s past and future, honoring its historical character while meeting the needs of contemporary users.
The design focuses on functionality, with careful attention to vertical circulation elements like stairways and elevators, ensuring smooth user flow and accessibility. The space is designed to support social interaction, creativity, and learning, with flexible gathering areas, communal seating, and workstations that cater to various user needs.
Drawing on Indiana University’s traditional color palette, the redesign maintains a connection to the institution’s legacy while introducing contemporary elements. This combination creates a seamless integration of past and present, offering a space that is both timeless and forward-thinking.
